A Different Kind of Reset | Realigning Our Hearts for a New Season

"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."
Colossians 3:2

There's something about the beginning of a new school year that feels like a fresh start.

For families, summer schedules begin to change. Bedtimes return, lunches are packed, backpacks are filled, calendars start getting crowded again, and we slowly settle back into routines. Even if you don't have children heading back to school, this time of year can feel like a natural transition from the slower days of summer into a new season.

We spend a lot of time preparing for it.

We buy the supplies. We organize the calendars. We plan the schedules. We figure out practices, drop-offs, work commitments, dinners, and everything else that comes with getting back into a routine. Whew!

But what if we used this season to reset something even more important?

Our hearts.

Colossians 3:2 tells us, "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

It's a simple instruction, but it's incredibly easy to forget when life gets busy. Without even realizing it, our attention can become consumed by schedules, accomplishments, money, appearances, comparison, activities, and everything we think we need to accomplish next.

None of those things are necessarily bad.
But they were never meant to become the center of our lives.

As we step into new routines, maybe this is an opportunity to ask ourselves what we're building those routines around.

Are we making room for God's Word, or simply fitting Him into whatever time is left?

Are we teaching our children that success is measured by grades, trophies, popularity, and accomplishments, or are we reminding them that who they are in Christ matters infinitely more?

Are we so focused on getting where we're going that we're missing the people God has placed along the way?

Realigning our hearts with things above doesn't always require some huge life change. Often, it looks like small choices made differently.

It might look like being generous when you have an opportunity to give. Complimenting someone instead of simply thinking something kind about them. Forgiving the person you've been holding resentment toward. Inviting the child sitting alone to join the group. Praying for a teacher. Encouraging a coworker. Putting your phone down long enough to really listen. Choosing patience when you're running late. Loving someone even when loving them isn't particularly easy.

These things may seem small, but this is where our faith becomes visible.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

As our children walk into classrooms and hallways this year, my prayer isn't simply that they would be successful. I pray they would be light.

I pray they notice the child who feels left out. I pray they have courage to stand for what is right when everyone else is going another direction. I pray they are generous with what they have, quick to encourage, willing to forgive, and unashamed to love Jesus.

And I pray the same for us.

Because our children are watching what we prioritize. They're watching how we speak about other people. They're watching whether we forgive. They're watching how generously we give, how quickly we judge, how faithfully we pray, and whether Jesus is truly at the center of our homes or simply something we talk about on Sundays.

A new school year gives us an opportunity to establish more than a new routine.
It gives us an opportunity to realign our family around what matters most.

Maybe that means starting the morning with a quick prayer before everyone rushes out the door. Maybe it's reading Scripture together at dinner or praying for classmates and teachers before bed. Maybe it's choosing one way your family can serve someone else each month. Or maybe it simply means becoming more intentional about looking for opportunities to love people like Jesus throughout the ordinary moments of your day.

We don't need perfect routines or perfect families.
We need hearts continually pointed back toward Him.

So as the backpacks are packed, calendars fill up, and another school year begins, let's make sure we're preparing our hearts too.

Set your mind on things above.
Give generously.
Encourage freely.
Forgive quickly.
Love deeply.

And wherever God places you this season, let your light shine.

Not so people will see how good you are, but so through the way you live, they might see how good He is.

Reflection

  • As you step into a new season and new routines, what is one area of your life or family that needs to be realigned with God?
  • What small change could you make this week to intentionally put Him back at the center?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, as we step into a new season, help us realign our hearts with You. When our schedules become busy and our attention is pulled in a hundred different directions, remind us to set our minds on things above. Help us build homes and lives centered on Your Word and Your presence. Watch over our children as they begin a new school year. Protect them, guide them, give them wisdom, and surround them with people who encourage them toward You. Give them courage to be different when following Jesus requires it and opportunities to be a light to the people around them. Teach all of us to notice people more. Help us give generously, encourage freely, forgive quickly, and love others the way Jesus has loved us. May the way we live point people toward You, and may our homes be places where faith isn't simply something we talk about, but something we live. In Jesus' name, amen.
