Liked or Light?

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house." -Matthew 5:14-15

We all want to be liked.

We want people to approve of us, understand us, include us, and celebrate our choices. There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting healthy relationships and meaningful connections. God created us for community.

The problem comes when our desire to be liked becomes greater than our desire to be faithful. At some point in every believer's walk, we are faced with a choice: will we prioritize being liked, or will we choose to be light?

Jesus didn't tell His followers to blend in with the world. He didn't tell them to hide their faith to avoid criticism or discomfort. He said, "You are the light of the world."

Light serves a purpose.

It reveals what is hidden. It guides people toward truth. It shines in darkness.

And because of that, light is often noticed.

Sometimes when God begins transforming our hearts, our priorities start to change. The things we once chased no longer satisfy us. The conversations we once entertained no longer align with our convictions. The habits we once defended begin to fall away.

Not everyone will understand those changes.

Some people may question them. Some may distance themselves because of them. Others may misunderstand your motives entirely.

Jesus experienced this Himself. The One who loved perfectly was rejected, mocked, and ultimately crucified.

If Jesus wasn't accepted by everyone, we shouldn't expect to be either. The truth is that living for God's glory will sometimes cost us the approval of people. But when we remember who we belong to, the opinions of the world begin to lose their power.

Our purpose was never to gather applause for ourselves.
Our purpose is to point people to Christ.
(Read that again!)

Every act of obedience, every moment of faithfulness, every decision to follow God even when it's unpopular becomes an opportunity for others to see Him more clearly.

The world doesn't need more Christians trying to fit in. 
The world needs believers willing to shine.
Not for attention. Not for recognition. Not for personal gain.
But so that others might come to know the One who called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light.

As you go through this week, ask yourself this question:
Am I making this decision because I want to be liked, or because I want to be light?

One leads to temporary approval. The other leads to eternal impact.

Reflection Questions

• Are there areas of your life where you've been hiding your faith to avoid disapproval?
• Have you been seeking the approval of people more than the approval of God?
• What does it look like for you to shine Christ's light in your current season?
• Is there a step of obedience God is calling you to take, even if others may not understand?

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me to be a light in this world. Help me care more about Your approval than the opinions of others. Give me courage to live faithfully, even when it's uncomfortable, and help my life reflect Your goodness and truth. May everything I do point others to You and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
