More Than an Emergency Contact | Why We Need God in the Good Times Too
Share
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
-Psalm 46:1
"Be still, and know that I am God."
-Psalm 46:10
When we think of Psalm 46, most of us immediately connect it to difficult seasons.
It's the passage we turn to when we're overwhelmed. When the diagnosis comes. When the relationship struggles. When the future feels uncertain. We cling to the promise that God is our refuge and strength because we desperately need somewhere safe to run. And rightly so.
But as I read this psalm recently, I couldn't help but notice something: God doesn't stop being our refuge when life gets easier. In fact, one of the greatest dangers in our walk with Christ is forgetting our dependence on Him when things are going well.
When life is hard, prayer often comes naturally.
When life is good, we can slowly drift into self-sufficiency.
We begin relying on our own plans, our own abilities, and our own strength. Not because we intend to push God aside, but because comfort has a way of making us forget how much we need Him.
Yet Psalm 46 doesn't say God was our refuge or will be our refuge. It says He is our refuge and strength. Always. In every season.
When the mountains are shaking AND when life feels steady.
When we're walking through a storm AND when we're standing in a season of blessing.
God never intended to be merely our emergency contact. He desires to be the center of our lives every single day. The truth is, our relationship with Him is just as important in seasons of abundance as in seasons of hardship.
In the hard times, we depend on Him for strength.
In the good times, we thank Him for His provision.
In the hard times, we seek His comfort.
In the good times, we seek His guidance.
In the hard times, we remember we need Him.
In the good times, we choose to remember we still need Him.
That's why verse 10 is so powerful: "Be still, and know that I am God."
Notice it doesn't say, "Be still when life falls apart."
It simply says, "Be still."
In every season, God invites us to pause long enough to remember who He is. To remember that every blessing comes from Him. To remember that our strength comes from Him. To remember that our security comes from Him. To remember that our hope comes from Him.
Whether you're walking through a difficult season today or enjoying a season of peace, the invitation is the same: draw near to God.
Not because you need a rescue. But because you need Him.
He is not only the God who carries us through the valleys. He is also the God who walks with us on the mountaintops. And He is worthy of our trust, our gratitude, and our devotion in both.

Prayer
Father, thank You for being my refuge and strength in every season of life. Forgive me for the times I only seek You when I need help. Help me remember that I need You just as much in seasons of blessing as I do in seasons of struggle. Teach me to remain close to You, to trust You, and to thank You daily for Your faithfulness. May my relationship with You continue to grow whether I'm walking through a valley or standing on a mountaintop. In Jesus' name, Amen.
