Strength for Where You Are | You Were Never Meant to Do It Alone

Strength for Where You Are | You Were Never Meant to Do It Alone

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13

Philippians 4:13 is one of those verses most of us have heard countless times. We see it on shirts, signs, sports gear, and social media: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." It is an incredibly encouraging verse, but when we slow down and look at what Paul was actually saying, I think it becomes even more meaningful.

In the verses leading up to Philippians 4:13, Paul talks about knowing what it's like to have plenty and knowing what it's like to be in need. He had experienced seasons of abundance, but he had also experienced incredible hardship. His life wasn't easy simply because he followed Jesus. Yet through all those seasons, Paul learned something that changed the way he walked through them: his strength didn't depend on his circumstances. His strength came from Christ.

I think sometimes we forget that. I know I definitely do.

We spend so much of our lives trying to be strong. We try to hold our families together, carry the weight of our responsibilities, figure out what comes next, fix what's broken, and keep moving forward even when we're exhausted. Somewhere along the way, we start believing that being strong means being able to handle it all.

But God never asked us to do this life in our own strength.

Maybe you're reading this, and your faith feels stronger than ever. Maybe you've been following Jesus for years, and you're in a season where you can clearly see His hand at work. But maybe that's not where you are at all. Maybe you're new to faith. Maybe you've drifted farther from God than you ever intended. Maybe life hasn't looked anything like you thought it would, and somewhere in the disappointment, busyness, or hurt, you've found yourself wondering how to get back to Him.

If that's you, I hope you hear this clearly today: you are not too far for God.

You don't have to clean yourself up before coming back to Him. You don't have to fix every mistake, break every bad habit, understand the entire Bible, or suddenly become the person you think a "good Christian" should be. You simply have to turn toward Him.

Jesus doesn't stand at the finish line waiting for us to become strong enough to reach Him. He meets us right where we are, in the mess, in the questions, in the exhaustion, and even in the wandering. My testimony is proof of this.

God is our Provider when we have no idea how things will work out. He is our Sustainer when we've been carrying something for so long that we aren't sure how much more we can take. He is our strength when our own strength has completely run out.

Now don't get me wrong... following Jesus does NOT make every hard thing disappear. Paul certainly didn't live that kind of life. Following Jesus means that when the hard things come, we don't have to face them alone or depend entirely on what we can muster up within ourselves.

There will be seasons when your faith feels strong, and there may be seasons when your prayer is nothing more than, "God, I need You." Both prayers reach the same Father.

So wherever you find yourself today, come to Him as you are. If you've wandered, turn back. If you're tired, lean on Him. If shame has convinced you that you've gone too far, remember that His grace is greater than anything in your past. You don't have to make your way back perfectly. You simply have to take the next step toward Him.

Because Philippians 4:13 isn't a promise that everything will go our way or that we'll be able to accomplish anything we set our minds to. It's the assurance that whatever season we walk through, Christ will be enough to sustain us through it.

You don't need to have enough strength today for everything that might come tomorrow. You just need to stay close to the One who does.

Reflection

  • Where in your life have you been trying to carry something in your own strength?
  • What would it look like to truly give that weight to God and trust Him to be your Provider, Sustainer, and Strength?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for meeting me exactly where I am and loving me even in the seasons when I feel far from You. When I am tired, overwhelmed, or unsure of what comes next, remind me that I was never meant to carry this life in my own strength. Help me surrender the things I've been trying to control and trust You as my Provider, my Sustainer, and my Strength. Draw me closer to You and remind me that Your grace is greater than my past and Your strength is enough for whatever lies ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.
